The Dark to the Light.

Hello friends, photographers, new readers, and anyone who is taking the plunge with me as I begin this new journey in to blogging! If you're reading this, you might be mental, and you probably deserve a cookie. A really, super delicious cookie because this first post might be rough. Anyways;

This blog is going to serve a range of purposes, but I created it for one simple reason - to talk about how we can all change the dark in to the light.

That ^ is my guiding sentence. I live my life from a place where I want to see the darkness of this world shifted, transformed, relinquished to the power of light. It's the spot where all of my art is created from and why I believe so strongly in creating art from my heart and soul, from real emotions and real stories. It's why I capture darkness as a relatable emotion, and why in my captions, I talk about what comes next - the light.

It wasn't easy for me to get to that spot. As I began my journey as a photographer 4 years ago, stepping out with what little faith I had at the time, I began a 365-day photography project that shaped the way I think, view, and act in relation to art, life, and creation. I recommend the project to anyone who is looking to start anything at all in their life.

That's why I'm here. That's why I'm writing this post. Why I'm starting a new weekly project. Because to change the dark in to the light, we must first light the match. Flip the switch. Spark the flare.

The best way to begin anything is to begin right now.

Whatever you're doing, stop. Take one exact, quantifiable step towards the goal you have in mind or the person you want to be. No, not later. Now. This very second. The best way to begin anything is to begin right now. That's why when I sat down for a cup of coffee at my favorite cafe today, and the fact that I've been wanting to blog forever came to my mind, I began. I only started writing this post an hour ago, but I know that to make this a regular part of my artistic, I have to begin now. It's how I began my artistic career with my 365 - I didn't think about how hard it would be. I just did it.

A Sure-Fire way to achieve your purpose:

1) Start RIGHT NOW.
2) Don't EVER stop.

This is something I try to remind myself of every day. If I want to do something - if I want to make something awesome happen and inspire the lives of others, if I want to change the dark in to the light, I have to start now. You can't wait for the right conditions to come along so that you can pursue the life you've always dreamed of. When I was a teenager, wrestling with emotions and heartache and all the other rough things that came with being a kid, I didn't even know what I was doing by starting a 365 photography project. But it proved to be the best thing I ever could have done, not only for my artistic growth, but my emotional and spiritual growth as well.

You can't wait for the right conditions to come along so that you can pursue the life you've always dreamed of.

I'm going to be honest here, too. Starting in the moment is both the easiest and hardest thing to do - it's easy, because it's just one step, but it's hard because of commitment. The key is to get yourself to a place where starting now is second-nature, and pursuing the dream until it calls you forward or tells you to stop is just natural. You're only one step away from the next grand adventure of your life - one step away from becoming a full-time photographer, entrepreneur, opening a business, getting that new position at work, creating that art piece, going on that trip around the world. And the best news about all this? It's just one step. Seriously. The rest compounds over time, incrementally, day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. I read a quote today by my favorite author, C.S. Lewis, that sums this idea up well:

"Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different..."

I couldn't think of a more applicable quote for this idea - instead of looking at it in a passive, "life-is-just-happening-to-me" way, I look at it in a way that when we take the first step towards our purpose, and we stick to pursuing that purpose, we will grow, day by day. We may not notice it in our day-to-day life, but when we look back on the week, month, year, decade.... we'll notice that first step, however small, was the biggest step in the right direction.

With that in mind, here we go: A new blog, a new project, and a new sense of direction because I've just started. I lit the match. I flipped the switch. And I hope to see you all do the same.
